BBM (Baseball Magazine) began printing cards in Japan in 1991. They started with Japanese baseball and eventually ventured into Sumo, other wrestling, and soccer cards. Their cards are of very high quality. Many of their baseball issues are highly sought after by collectors, especially cards featuring players like Ichiro Suzuki who made such a wonderful transition to MLB.
In 2009, BBM starting issuing an annual multi-sports set featuring women athletes originally called “Real Venus.” In 2017, they changed the name to “Shining Venus.” The sports covered are wide-ranging, including soccer, golf, badminton, swimming, basketball, and more. The base set is generally comprised of 93 cards, with three different cards for each of 31 athletes. The three are categorized into “Real/Shining Venus,” “Playing Venus” (an action shot) and “Venus Shot” (a portrait in dress or casual clothing). In addition, there are other cards, such as pairs, parallels, facsimile and actual autographs, etc. These will be listed as they become known. Sachiyo Yamada appears in the first four sets (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012). Four lacrosse athletes have been featured since then: Natsuki Taniyama (2014), Akane Kuoriwa (2017), Asuka Noo (2018), and Shosho Kobori (2019).
